SCAPIS advocates a transparent and open research environment. Projects that have been granted access to SCAPIS data are published here continuously.

For each project that has been granted access to SCAPIS data, a brief project summary is published here. The intention is to facilitate and encourage collaborations between research groups, and advocate transparency to all parties in the use of data.

Before the nationwide opening of the SCAPIS database in March 2021, some research projects had already begun. These research projects stem from the SCAPIS pilot study, interim studies on half of the SCAPIS cohort, local substudies and SCAPIS core projects.

SCAPIS Steering Committee has acknowledged some research questions that SCAPIS should address. They are defined as core publications.
The core publications are of strategic importance and provide significant value to the SCAPIS cohort. The research hypotheses for the core publications are described in detail in their specific Topic Research Form (TRF).
A core publication has embargo on its research question. The embargo ends one year after the principal researcher for the core publication receives the required data set from SCAPIS. Some of the SCAPIS core publications have received their data sets, and the expiration dates of their embargos are noted in the Topic Research Form. Authors of the core publications includes researchers who contributed substantially to the collection of SCAPIS core data and they are nominated from each collaborating site.
Note, it is of high importance that new applications do not interfere with the research questions defined in the SCAPIS core publications. If they do, they may not be approved.
In addition to the core baseline examinations, all sites added some additional examinations defined as local substudies.
In addition to the SCAPIS core examinations, some local researchers performed an extra investigation on the SCAPIS cohort during the data collection phase, thus adding to the scientific value of the SCAPIS data base. The data collected from the local substudies are also included in the SCAPIS database.
For locally collected variables, the principal investigator of the local substudy has embargo on the collected variables and he/she must approve before potential data sharing.
Several local substudies have already published reports, and more are on their way.
A Pilot study (n=1,111) was performed in Gothenburg 2012 in order to examine and evaluate the practical and economical aspects, as well as the scientific value of a larger nationwide study.
More than 40 articles have been published on the data collected in the SCAPIS Pilot, and there is still ongoing research on the pilot material.
SCAPIS encourages continued use of pilot data on its own and as a validation cohort to the core data set. The principal investigator at the Gothenburg site must approve data sharing from the pilot data set.
SCAPIS 2 – re-examination
A re-examination of the study participants in SCAPIS is currently being planned. During 2013-2018, the SCAPIS study carried out extensive examinations of the hearts, vessels, and lungs of 30,154 women and men. Participants aged 50-64 years were randomly selected and the examinations that have been carried out included blood tests, X-rays (CT), lung function tests, registration of physical activity and questionnaires about lifestyle and eating habits. The purpose of SCAPIS 2 is to re-examine half of these study participants, a total of 15,000, at all sites, which will provide a unique opportunity to follow the participants' health. The study will start in January 2024.
In addition to the core baseline examinations, all sites will add some additional examinations defined as local sub studies. See list of preliminary sub studies.
